Causes of Window Condensation

Condensation is caused by warm air coming into contact with cold surfaces. This is a common occurrence in older homes during the winter as the warm air inside your home comes into contact with the cold glass of your windows.

When this occurs, it is similar to the condensation on the outside of a drinking glass during the summer months. Because cool air is unable to hold onto moisture in the same way that warmer air can, when this warmer air cools, the water vapor is released onto the cool window surface. Although window condensation is most common during winter months, it can occur anything the surface temperature of your windows is lower than the dew point.

What Condensation Means

The meaning of condensation is largely related to the cause of the condensation. If the condensation occurs on the outside of windows during the summer, this can actually indicate highly efficient windows. That is because the windows are adequately keeping cold air inside the home and warm air outside where it belongs.

During the winter, however, condensation on the inside of your windows can be a different story. Unless the droplets are caused by humidity from cooking dinner or taking a hot shower, it may be caused by an improper window seal or inadequate window insulation. When this water drips down your windows, it can cause damage to your walls and interior. It can also mean your energy costs are higher than they should be.

Check around your windows for these signs of trouble:

●        Drafty air

●        Gaps between the frame and window

●        Condensation between window panes

●        Moisture underneath window or on window sill
